This is a COURTESY POST for Pregnant Dog Rescue in Newfoundland, PA Abby is NOT in our rescue. You must contact Cindy at www.pregnantdogrescue.petfinder.com Here's Abby's story. We received a call from a lady whose Yorkie became pregnant and died just 3 days after delivering Abby. The lady could not keep up with the requirements - feeding and caring for a days old tiny 4 oz. infant Yorkie puppy. She asked for our help. Abby had inhaled some fluids into her lungs when the woman tried to feed her a bottle. The fluid in her lungs rattled and caused Abby a lot of distress. We feared pneumonia and waited for news. We sent out word that we had a puppy who needed a nursing mother immediately. Yorkie breeders turned us down. Cindy didn't. We transported the puppy to Cindy's rescue, in Newfoundland, PA. Cindy's nursing Chihuahua mother, Latte, had days old puppies too. BUT would she allow another puppy to join her family? Cindy knew what to do. She used Abby's blanket to wrap around one of the Chihuahua puppies to get that smell to the mother. Latte took Abby in. She cleaned the new puppy over and over. She nudged her with her nose; tossed her and stimulated her. We didn't know if Abby would make it. She was on the brink. Dehydrated, weak to the point she couldn't raise her tiny head, we held our breaths and waited. Hour by hour, Cindy cared for Abby and gave her fluids. The critical point was getting Abby to hold on to the life giving nipple. Abby was so weak, we despaired of her being able to do the one thing that would save her life. Then word came - at 3:00 am - Abby had latched on to Latte and was hanging on for dear life. She never let go. Slowly she gained fractions of an ounce. Then more and more. She mingled with the chihuahua puppies and fought for her place on the warm mother's body. Abby would eat until she couldn't take in any more and then she would sleep on her back like a bug. Abby started out precariously small and weak. Today she weighs 24 oz. She is about 8 weeks old and will soon be ready to come home. we are looking for a very fine family for this little fighter who never quit. If you are sure you can handle a Yorkie puppy, please fill out an application and contact Cindy in Newfoundland, PA. Abby is alive thanks to a smart lady who knows about puppies and the little Chihuahua mother who nursed her. YAHOOOOO!!!
