Gentle Ben is available for adoption.
He is 8 years old and weighs 10 lbs. His adoption fee is $300.00 Bumping along I-95, Ben stared out the passenger side window, occasionally watching the wipers swipe back and forth on the windshield. What an adventure! This was the most fun Ben had had in a long time and he wished his family was here with him, especially Pauly and Thomas, his sons, and Carmella, his lifelong mate. They were way back home with Mom. Everything had happened so fast. Last night his mom had picked him up, held him, cried a little and put her face in his neck fur, and then, stroking him gently, handed him over to a man who looked so much like Santa Claus, Ben was bedazzled. The man knew how to be tender with a dog who did not know him. Yes, that was where it started and now Ben was on a road trip to who-knows-where. He was a little bewildered but, heck, this was a car ride and he LOVED car rides. The rain was falling steadily, making a soothing patter on the car’s roof. Hour after hour, through three states, they kept rolling along. Santa kept up a steady sing song to let Ben know that there was nothing to fear and it was just a happy trip. A phone call came through and a women’s soft voice – she was waiting for Ben at their rendezvous. Pulling into a puddle speckled parking lot, Santa eased the van into an open space and turned the key. Standing there waiting patiently, was Lynn. A simple woman, Lynn, who, despite her petite size, is known to rescue as a priceless jewel, a rare and valuable commodity, so hard to find, so precious and surprisingly, admired greatly for something most people already do. She loves dogs. She loves dogs more than she thinks of herself. She is a loving foster mother for Yorkshire Terriers. Ben was coming to Lynn because he had nowhere else to go and she was willing to give him a happy, comfortable, loving, experienced, temporary home. Her last foster had just left a few weeks ago and Lynn volunteered for the next needy dog. Ben jumped out of the car and, walking slowly around he found his land legs. He had a chance to lift a leg on a tire. Ahhh… that felt so good! When he turned around, he saw Lynn smiling at him. Without chasing him or standing over him, Lynn waited for Ben to come over and inspect her shoes. He waddled over self-consciously to meet Lynn and then looked up expectantly. Lynn grinned and picked him up asking, “Ready for another ride?” Ben was understandably shy at first. Everything was so strange and new. Everything in his world had changed overnight – he had lost his only family, his only home and he was with strangers in a strange land. If he had been a person, he would have been screaming in terror and shock. But Benny was doing what dogs do – taking it in stride and doing his best to acclimate to it all. So Benny, who loves car rides, jumped up on the passenger side, got buckled in and didn't mind riding shot gun for the next stage of his adventure. He was proud to be the wing man for Lynn. When they arrived in Kingston, it was almost like he knew his next home was near and his eyes sparkled with anticipation. Jumping out of the car he espied a new friend. Lynn led him over to meet her Yorkie, Chazzy Bear. Being well socialized dogs, they sniffed each other, decided to be friends and went on a long walk around the neighborhood. Benny was tired from all of the changes the day had brought, so he was relieved to quietly follow Chazzy into his home. To Lynn, it seemed like he just decided he owned the place. Gentle Ben was home. Lynn watched as Ben adapted and found he climbed stairs with ease. He had a hearty appetite – eating a good dinner – which is rare for a new foster dog on the first day, as Lynn was aware. Lynn feeds her dogs twice a day so it will be an adjustment for him - he is used to a bowl full of food for him to graze all day. She knows he loves to go for walks on a leash and he adores his squeaky toys. Ben is a darling, easy going, well socialized love bug who loves people and other dogs. He wants to jump on your lap and would ask you to pay attention while he gives you a loving gaze from his liquid brown eyes. He’s only been with Lynn for a few hours. She’ll give us more details as she observes her new treasure to find out what he likes, what he doesn’t like, what he needs to be the happiest Yorkie ever. Ben will visit a vet to have his microchip inserted – and then he will be all set for another new adventure. And Lynn will kiss him goodbye, cry a little and wait for the next homeless Yorkie who needs that one simple thing – a temporary place to settle before her next adventure. Please consider fostering and keep coming back to check on Gentle Ben. He won’t be in rescue long. Gentle Ben is vacationing in Kingston, NY, with Lynn and Chazzy Bear.More about Gentle BenGood with Dogs Save A Yorkie Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) qualified non-profit organization operating on donations from Yorkie lovers who care.
