Gobi is available for adoption.

He is 8 months old and weighs 10 lbs.

His adoption fee is $600

His story so far -

Gobi wiggled in his mom’s arms as she answered the door. He was so eager to meet the strangers!  Someone new!  Something interesting to sniff.  He hadn’t had any fun in so long, this was a special treat.  The man with dark eyes knelt to cup Gobi’s chin in one hand and then gave him a gentle rub on the chest.  Gobi’s eyes sparkled as he ran and jumped and whirled with puppy excitement.  Oh, how good to have friends visit!  The other Visitor’s eyes tightened as she gazed around the house that smelled, the carpet that was black with stains and noticed that the teenage girl at the dining room table did not even glance up to see what the commotion was all about.

The owner apologized for the mess, for having to give Gobi up, for buying him after she had just given away another Yorkie who was only two years old, for not walking him, for not training him… for having purchased him from a backyard breeder in the first place.  Gobi was too busy sniffing, jumping and running to be sorry for anything.  He was overjoyed at the chance that someone might touch him, pay attention, throw toys – show him love in any form.

The strangers were from rescue and they knew how to treat a Yorkie puppy.  Smiling knowingly, handing out choice treats and calming the happy puppy, papers were signed, pictures were taken and plans were made to pick up Gobi from the vet the next day.  Of course he hadn’t been neutered, he had baby teeth that were pushing his permanent teeth out of alignment and he needed to be tested and placed on heartworm meds.  Gobi didn’t care – he was sure it was all good and his dull, boring life in a box was soon to change.  And he was right.

Gobi rode in the car on his way to his new foster mom, hours away.  He whimpered gently before drifting off to sleep as the car rocked gently on the highway.  When he woke it was time to get out and stretch.  He sniffed everything, interested in everything and ran from trashcan to tree to sign post. But he did not pee. He had not been outside in a long time and this was all so fascinating.  Even with gentle urging, knowing he had to go so badly, Gobi was too busy to do anything but find new scents.  A family with older children saw him coming and asked to pet him.  Assured that he was a friendly dog, they crouched and gently touched his head. Gobi, unsure what they wanted, squatted and dribbled – submissive peeing. It was his way of saying, “I don’t know what to do but I want to be good.”

Thus began Gobi’s journey into rescue….  He is a delightful puppy who knows how to sit!  He is intelligent and social, happy and eager to learn.  What he needs – is obedience classes with lots of practice and the best treats he can enjoy.  He needs someone who is home to take him out for housetraining because he is used to peeing inside. We hope he will have a fenced yard to run and play in since he was never allowed outside in his first home - so he has no experience off leash in a grassy yard. Another friendly adult dog would be an added joy to show him the ropes.  His new family must be an active one as all puppies need many walks a day to diffuse that puppy energy.  And one thing we absolutely INSIST on is that his new family will brush his lovely snow white teeth every day.  Every day!  It is a requirement for every Yorkie adopted from our rescue. It will save their life and preserve their ability to eat and grip toys and treats.

Gobi is quite friendly. There is no meanness or aggression in him for dogs or people. He rides well in a car - no car sickness. He has never met a cat so we can't say much on that score. He eats his dog food and is not fussy.  He is more intelligent than most people and knows how to sit on command. Classes will bring out this fine quality and he will be a well trained dog for the next 16 years.

He won't be in rescue long since he is a puppy and a very nice boy with a real-by-God tail. Such a jewel! People are already calling for Gobi. He will be adopted quickly.

Gobi is vacationing in Hanover, MD with Sharon and her gang.

KEEP THESE FACTS IN MIND:
1. Yorkies do not usually get along well with small children and can be injured by small children, even ones who love them. Be aware of this and keep them apart. 2. Yorkies can be very difficult (nearly impossible) to housebreak. If you are gone for more than 3 hours at a time, the dog will have to have access to wee wee pads, or need someone to stop in to let him out to potty.
3. We almost NEVER get a puppy (less than one year old) in Yorkie Rescue. If only a puppy will do, check the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website for a recommended breeder - never buy over the Internet, or from a newspaper ad or a petstore. The heartache you save will be immeasureable.
4. There is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie, so don't be misled by such a description. LEARN about the breed BEFORE you decide to adopt.
5. You will need to make arrangements to drive and meet the dog at the foster home which can be in New Jersey, western PA, Maryland,  etc. The dog's biography lists where the dog is fostering. We want you to meet the dog with your family and your dog, if you have one. This is a requirement for adoption.

WHAT IS THE ADOPTION FEE?
Adoption donations generally vary from dog to dog, it depends on the health, the age and the size of the dog.

Young Yorkies will have a higher adoption donation since they are the most highly sought after and they help to cover the costs of the older dogs who have a harder time finding a loving home. It is sad but true that people overwhelming demand very young dogs when they would be infinitely happier with a mellow adult.
