She is 8 years old and weighs 12 lbs.

Penny Lou WAS a slightly tarnished penny someone tossed to the curb, but with the help of the Humane Society of Charles County, Maryland, Save a Yorkie Rescue welcomed this little dog into its care, and Penny has become a shining Penny, soon to become a brilliantly shining Penny! (She just needs a day at the beauty parlor and a few extra pounds!) Penny was suffering from tumors that went unchecked for a very long time, allowing them to grow quite large and weighing in at over a pound.  That was a heavy load for this little girl to be dragging around, and she now tips the scales at a trim 11 pounds. 

Penny has been recovering nicely from her surgery, and her stitches and staples will be removed shortly.  All of the postop labwork shows that Penny’s tumors were benign.  Approximately 8 years of age, Penny is definitely a friend to all. She is good with dogs, children, and people in general, although she can be a little shy at first.

Penny is a love bug who needs people around her as much as possible.  Although she may pick a favorite person, she shares her love with all in the home.  She will most definitely make a loving, loyal companion to some lucky family out there.

Her favorite pastime is taking walks.  She loves exploring the neighborhood and our nature preserve.  When she has completely healed, we are anxious to take her to our local dog park so that she can run freely and play with other friends.  She appears to be younger than her chronological age in terms of play.  She also adores stuffed toys, chew bones, and some squeaky toys.  Unfortunately for the stuffed toys, they are quickly deflated and left unrecognizable, but they are completely loved.

She is a great sleeper through the night, and after a quick potty outside when morning arrives, she is one to go back to sleep for a few hours….quite the little sleepy head.  She is potty trained, and knows some basic commands like “sit”, “lay” and “stay”.  Her bark is a deep one, which is somewhat humorous when compared to her diminutive size, but her voice is only heard if someone knocks at the door or if she is protecting us from strangers during a ride in our car.  She is typically a quiet soul.

If your family has time to spend with this special pup, if you are looking for a lap dog and a faithful companion, if you, too, enjoy walks throughout the day, if you enjoy interactive play with a stuffed animal and a dog, and, most importantly, if you have lots of love to give, please consider this sweet charmer who is so deserving of a good life from this moment forward.

KEEP THESE FACTS IN MIND:
1. Yorkies do not usually get along well with small children and can be injured by small children, even ones who love them. Be aware of this and keep them apart. 2. Yorkies can be very difficult (nearly impossible) to housebreak. If you are gone for more than 3 hours at a time, the dog will have to have access to wee wee pads, or need someone to stop in to let him out to potty.
3. We almost NEVER get a puppy (less than one year old) in Yorkie Rescue. If only a puppy will do, check the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website for a recommended breeder - never buy over the Internet, or from a newspaper ad or a petstore. The heartache you save will be immeasureable.
4. There is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie, so don't be misled by such a description. LEARN about the breed BEFORE you decide to adopt.
5. You will need to make arrangements to drive and meet the dog at the foster home which can be in New Jersey, western PA, Maryland,  etc. The dog's biography lists where the dog is fostering. We want you to meet the dog with your family and your dog, if you have one. This is a requirement for adoption.

WHAT IS THE ADOPTION FEE?
Adoption donations generally vary from dog to dog, it depends on the health, the age and the size of the dog.

Young Yorkies will have a higher adoption donation since they are the most highly sought after and they help to cover the costs of the older dogs who have a harder time finding a loving home. It is sad but true that people overwhelming demand very young dogs when they would be infinitely happier with a mellow adult. 

 

 ADOPTION AREA

Save A Yorkie Rescue prefers to adopt only in the PA, NJ, western NY, DE, MD, VA, some CT area's. If you are in the NYC area or near Long Island, there is a Yorkie Rescue closer to you. 

Be aware that you will be asked to drive to meet and pick up your dog.
