Nickle is available for adoption.

He is 6 years old and weighs 17 pounds (he will be sheddding some weight but is naturally a larger Yorkie).

His adoption fee is $650.00.

Nickel’s heart is as big as those adorable ears! Despite the sadness of having so much change in just a few short days, Nickel has adapted well in his foster home. We were told he is about 6.5 years old and the groomer weighed him in at 17 pounds. Although we are working to shed just a couple pounds, he is not in bad shape and is just a naturally bigger sized Yorkie. He is also neutered.

We have only had Nickel in foster for just about a week so we are learning more about him everyday. But my favorite trait so far is how absolutely loving this guy is. After only knowing me for a short time, he is always ready for a snuggle session, sits at my feet, follows me around, and wiggles with joy when I walk through the door! I also love all the little sounds he makes from random grunts as he trots around to the light snoring he does when snoozing away. Nickel has been a very relaxed dog and can be further described as a couch potato. He enjoys just curling up with a nice blanket next to you (or on you!).

Nickel is dog friendly! He came from a house with other dogs and had a seamless introduction with his two foster doggy friends, one of which was also adopted from Save a Yorkie Rescue a few years ago! Although he gets along well with dogs, he mostly prefers to sit on the sidelines and watch them play rather than get involved so he would do great in a household with or without other dogs! He’s a pretty flexible guy!

We are unsure if he is cat friendly, as we do not have cats in his foster home. We are unsure if he is kid friendly, as we do not have kids in his foster home, but we plan to introduce him to family to figure this out and have a better sense of his ideal home situation.

Nickel has excellent potty manners and potties outside on a regular schedule. He walks well on a leash and harness - does not pull at all! Using a harness is strongly advised, as Yorkies are prone to having tracheal issues. Nickel will sometimes do a reverse sneeze/wheeze so it’s better to not chance using just a collar.

Nickel does not know any commands and attempts to dart out of the door any time it opens. He has not been successful but we are currently working on door manners as a priority along with other basic command training. In his short time with us, he is already showing progress with backing away from the door and waiting for the okay before coming out to the fenced in yard. Practice will make perfect!

Overall, Nickel will make such a great addition to your family if you’re looking for a calm, relaxed, low energy dog who just wants to be loved! Feel free to reach out and ask any questions as we learn more about this awesome pup!

Nickle is staying with Olivia in Elkton, MD.

KEEP THESE FACTS IN MIND:
1. Yorkies do not usually get along well with small children and can be injured by small children, even ones who love them. Be aware of this and keep them apart. 2. Yorkies can be very difficult (nearly impossible) to housebreak. If you are gone for more than 3 hours at a time, the dog will have to have access to wee wee pads, or need someone to stop in to let him out to potty.
3. We almost NEVER get a puppy (less than one year old) in Yorkie Rescue. If only a puppy will do, check the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website for a recommended breeder - never buy over the Internet, or from a newspaper ad or a petstore. The heartache you save will be immeasureable.
4. There is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie, so don't be misled by such a description. LEARN about the breed BEFORE you decide to adopt.
5. You will need to make arrangements to drive and meet the dog at the foster home which can be in New Jersey, western PA, Maryland,  etc. The dog's biography lists where the dog is fostering. We want you to meet the dog with your family and your dog, if you have one. This is a requirement for adoption.

WHAT IS THE ADOPTION FEE?
Adoption donations generally vary from dog to dog, it depends on the health, the age and the size of the dog.

Young Yorkies will have a higher adoption donation since they are the most highly sought after and they help to cover the costs of the older dogs who have a harder time finding a loving home. It is sad but true that people overwhelming demand very young dogs when they would be infinitely happier with a mellow adult.

 ADOPTION AREA

Save A Yorkie Rescue prefers to adopt only in the PA, NJ, western NY, DE, MD, VA, some CT area's. If you are in the NYC area or near Long Island, there is a Yorkie Rescue closer to you.

Be aware that you will be asked to drive to meet and pick up your dog.
