Xena is available for adoption.

She is 10 years old and weighs 15 lbs.

Her adoption fee is $350.00.

Xena is a Morkie, a Yorkie and Maltese mix.  She is a loving girl that is full energy.  Xena came to us from a very loving family.  Her parents gave her up to give her a better home life. She has been kept in their finished basement, separated from the family because she and their toddler son didn't get along (this is a very common behavior for Yorkies).  She never bit him but she would bark at him.

Xena has been with us for a couple of days and she loves to give love, snuggles and kisses, and she also loves to receive love and attention.  Her first day she would bark at us if we didn't pet her or have her on our lap, but that has seemed to lessen! But... if she wants to be near you, she will be :-)

Some of Xena's favorite past times include: cuddling, belly scratches, walking, laying in her bed and watching out the window, sunbathing (laying on her bed inside as the sun shines through the window).

Regarding house breaking, we take her out every 2 hours to ensure she goes outside.  Xena is good at telling us when she has to go out, but given this is a new environment, we have to be consistent with routine.

We learned she is very vocal and likes to talk to us! We haven't figured out all of her barks yet, but this is what we know so far. She has a bark for "mom, dad, I'm here but I want to be with you..." She has "I need to go outside..." She has the "omg, I am so excited, so excited, so excited [insert for a walk, outside, toy, etc."  She definitely is talkative, but she listens very well when we tell her "no." The only time she won't stop barking (we'll work on this) is for going outside (she just loves it, she'll run to the door, run in circles and jumps. She gets so, so excited). We are working on learning all of her different barks.

Xena will be going to the vet to get looked at next week.  I will update when I know more.  From what I see, she is in very good shape.  We have an upstairs but she won't climb stairs, but she certainly goes down them if I can't get her first.

Overall, Xena is a really loving dog, who I cannot wait to see more of her personality come about.  I'll keep you posted as I learn more about her!

Xena is staying with Katie in Sackets Harbor, NY.

KEEP THESE FACTS IN MIND:
1. Yorkies do not usually get along well with small children and can be injured by small children, even ones who love them. Be aware of this and keep them apart. 2. Yorkies can be very difficult (nearly impossible) to housebreak. If you are gone for more than 3 hours at a time, the dog will have to have access to wee wee pads, or need someone to stop in to let him out to potty.
3. We almost NEVER get a puppy (less than one year old) in Yorkie Rescue. If only a puppy will do, check the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America website for a recommended breeder - never buy over the Internet, or from a newspaper ad or a petstore. The heartache you save will be immeasureable.
4. There is no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie, so don't be misled by such a description. LEARN about the breed BEFORE you decide to adopt.
5. You will need to make arrangements to drive and meet the dog at the foster home which can be in New Jersey, western PA, Maryland,  etc. The dog's biography lists where the dog is fostering. We want you to meet the dog with your family and your dog, if you have one. This is a requirement for adoption.

WHAT IS THE ADOPTION FEE?
Adoption donations generally vary from dog to dog, it depends on the health, the age and the size of the dog.

Young Yorkies will have a higher adoption donation since they are the most highly sought after and they help to cover the costs of the older dogs who have a harder time finding a loving home. It is sad but true that people overwhelming demand very young dogs when they would be infinitely happier with a mellow adult.

 ADOPTION AREA

Save A Yorkie Rescue prefers to adopt only in the PA, NJ, western NY, DE, MD, VA, some CT area's. If you are in the NYC area or near Long Island, there is a Yorkie Rescue closer to you.

Be aware that you will be asked to drive to meet and pick up your dog.
