Every dog MUST have a vet ! Don't have a vet yet?
Get references from friends and neighbors for a local vet they trust. Contact the vets to be sure they are taking new clients. Check their hours, their prices, their affiliations with surgical hospitals, etc. When you decide which vet you will use, call them and tell them you are going to be adopting a Yorkie and will be scheduling a wellness visit with them.
We hope that senior citizens will keep in mind that adult Yorkies need them most and we believe it is not a good idea to place puppies or young dogs with seniors. Our dogs have lost so much; we don't want the dogs to lose their home again. So please, if you are a senior citizen, please ask for an adult/senior dog. If you are 70 years of age or older, and will not consider a dog over the age of 8 years, please do not apply.
We would like all of our dogs to be walked - everyday - 2 times each day for 30 minutes, weather permitting. If you cannot or will not walk the dog, please do not apply. A walk to a dog is like TV, a movie and all the fun you enjoy each day. The dog must be on a HARNESS - NEVER a collar and NEVER on a flexi lead! Dogs are killed because a flexi-lead makes it difficult to control a dog.

Have you ever housetrained a dog successfully?*
The most important thing you can do for your pet is to spay or neuter it. Are all of your pets spayed or neutered? If not, please do not proceed.*
All of our dogs are currently being fostered with a family. Someone is fostering and loving the dog you want to adopt. We are always looking for good families to foster the next dog who needs to be rescued. We need you to foster just ONE dog for us to show that you believe in rescue and what we do. Will you foster and give a Yorkie a temporary home? *
Are you applying for a particular Yorkie on our website? Choose an animal: A Abigale A Charlotte A Deno A Dupris A Handsome Prince A Keeley A Tess

What is your age? And the age of your spouse/partner (if applicable)?*
What is your current employment status? If you are currently employed, please provide your employer's name. *
If you have children under the age of 10 -- please STOP HERE! Children under the age of 10 are the number one reason that Yorkies are surrendered to rescue. If yes, is your yard fenced? (Be aware that an electric fence is no fence at all: 1. Big dogs can walk over and kill the Yorkie. 2. A thief can walk over and steal the Yorkie. 3. If the Yorkie runs through the fence, he cannot come home because he will be shocked. An electric fence is no fence at all for a small dog.) Choose one: Unfenced Yard Yard Completely Fenced
If your yard is fenced, please describe the type of fence and how tall the fence is.
If your home has an in-ground pool that is NOT fenced SEPARATELY from your yard -- STOP HERE! Yorkies do not naturally know how to swim and can drown just as easily as a toddler. If you have an in-ground pool that a dog would have access to while out in the yard, we are unable to process your application. Do you have a pool in your yard that is not fenced separately from your yard?* Choose one: Yes No

Do you currently own a cat(s)? Be aware - Yorkies should never have access to cat food (they consider it delicious but it is poisonous to the dog.) Are your current pets spayed or neutered? Have your previous pets been spayed or neutered? (The reason for this question is not because we are so concerned about puppies. Animals who are not spayed or neutered are much more prone to life threatening health issues like pyometra and mammary cancer in females or prostate cancer and peri-anal tumors in males. If someone does not spay or neuter their pet, it is cause for concern about their care and knowledge of a new dog.) * Choose one: Yes No

We would love to have your help doing rescue work. Our rescue is totally dependent on the efforts of many volunteers. Of course, we always need foster homes. There are also many other opportunities to help that do not involve bringing a foster dog into your home. Making phone calls, transporting a dog, manning a table at pet events, sewing dog beds -- there is a spot for you here in our rescue. Tell us how you want to help to save a Yorkie. We are so happy to have you join us - list the ways you want to help. *
Have you applied to other rescues/shelters for a dog?* Choose one: Yes No
Please understand that we, and all of the other rescues, will be doing the same time consuming work of processing your application. You will probably only be adopting from one rescue. But all of us will be conducting phone interviews, setting up home visits and contacting the same vet for your references. We understand that you are looking for the right dog for your family. But we have very limited time to process your application - we all work full time jobs and have just a few hours left to do our rescue work - so time is very precious to us. If you want to adopt a dog from another rescue, WONDERFUL! We are happy to see any dog find a home. Please choose one rescue and stay with them until you find the right dog for your family. Just let us know that you are applying elsewhere and we will put your application on hold until you tell us that you have adopted elsewhere or want to adopt from us. Thank you for your understanding.
As part of the adoption process, we at Save A Yorkie Rescue will make every effort to provide you with a full and honest evaluation of the temperament of every dog we have in rescue.
